instrument building week

last month we had “instrument building week” here at school in rauland, part of which involved feasting on sheep shanks, then cleaning, boiling and sawing the leg bones left on our plate and carving them into traditional bone flutes. the result of those labours has mostly been looking pretty/macabre on my bookshelf, but we also made seljefløytes! I’d wanted to try playing one of these crazy overtone flutes for a long time, and I hadn’t realized how simple they were to build. one of my friends was so enthused that he made a longer, deeper one out of a red plastic road marker pole… it sounds great, but my arms are just a bit too short to reach the end. anyways, I’ve been happily tweetling away on my little one.
